Winter mushroom & cacao potion

My favourite night time treat and super adaptogenic potion for the winter season - this to die for mushroom cacao latte.

The chaga is one of the most nutrient rich wild tree mushrooms with many medicinal properties - it grows only on birch trees in the northern forest, it can’t be grown in any way and it basically looks more like a super solid black growth on the trunk of the tree rather than your regular cap mushroom that grows on soil. That’s if you want to go out and harvest it on your own (or have a boyfriend who does like Joren who teaches how to do this during our Sweden expedition coming up in Dec this year!), otherwise you can buy it already made into a powder that you can add into your favourite latte mix (mine is the below) for instant goodness.

Then we have cacao, and who doesn’t like cacao, if only we drink the highest quality raw version of it as opposed to the usually super sugary roasted mix you get at normal supermarkets. Go for organic, fair trade, and never add it to super hot drinks as the temperature kills the nutrients. For me, when I drink cacao mindfully, I feel like I’m entering another state of consciousness; my body heats up (which means increased blood flow and therefore detoxification), my heart opens, and I feel love for the whole world. Yum.

Maca is the Peruvian root known of its adaptogenic effects as it can balance out hormones of the endocrine system. Plus it gives a delicious added creaminess to the whole thing.

Vanilla - the real vanilla that comes straight from the pods of the plant, is a real medicine with many properties such as reducing inflammation, calming nausea and activating receptors in the brain for clarity boost! Plus it’s one of the most powerful anti-oxidants making it a super detoxifier. But it has to be good quality, and like cacao, you shouldn’t add it to super hot drinks as that kills the goodness.

Coconut oil - I always add some fat in my hot drinks, from coffee to mushroom and cacao latte because a) it tastes delicious, b) the texture is dreamy, and c) fat helps the nutrients found in all these to be absorbed better. In my coffee I like ghee but for this latte, I love the fresh vanilla-y fragrance and natural sweetness of organic raw virgin coconut oil.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tsp chaga powder (or half a cup of brewed tea from fresh)

  • 1 tsp cacao powder

  • 1/2 tsp maca root powder

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla power or the seeds from a pod

  • 1 tsp coconut oil - the one with the natural fragrance

  • 1 cup of nut milk - I like oat for the sweetness

PREPARE | warm up the nut milk (don’t boil or even close!), add all the ingredients into the pot and blend using a steel hand blender (never plastic in hot drinks to avoid BPA leaks) until frothy.

TIP | to travel I love these ready mixed sachets as you can take them with you everywhere.
