Why and how I tune into the moon

Earlier this week I wrote about my relationship with astrology and how it has shifted over the years, from something I never considered as a thing to now learning more and more about. It was the time of the full moon in Cancer during January that led me to open up about this work that I do myself tuning into the phases of the moon and I’d love to share more about it as I find it a great way to keep in track with doing my inner-work.

For me, following the cycles of the moon is like riding the wave that is already there, cosmically and energetically, to consciously work on myself. It’s a way to become more aware of myself, my limiting patterns and what is holding me back from achieving my goals.

So, let’s start with the basics; the moon rotates around the earth as its satellite and together they rotate around the sun, which means the gravitational and energetic impact the moon has on the earth changes according to its position in relation to the sun.

When the moon is in between the sun and the earth, no light is reflected on its surface back to the earth, therefore we call it the dark moon or new moon because it’s in that phase where it's only going to be growing in light reflection from then on. As the moon keeps rotating around the earth it then finds itself in the first quarter, where we see only half of its one side lit up. Then as it moves away from the sun and beyond the earth, we can see its whole half side as the sun light is reflected towards the earth, meaning the moon reflects the fullest energy possible - that is the full moon. From then on, the moon rotates further and back into its last quarter where the other half of its one side is lit, to then go back to its dark phase where we can’t see it anymore. Here’s an illustration for the moon cycle in relation to the sun to help you visualise this continuous flow.

As I wrote in the January full moon post, the impact these different phases have on the planet and all life on it has been well known for millenia, from the ocean tides to weather patterns, to the way all agriculture organises itself around it. Similarly these energies affect our bodies, moods and cycles, and I’ve personally found that tuning into them and noticing how they affect me physically, mentally, emotionally, is a practice that helps me in ways such as:

  • regulate my menstrual cycle

  • relieve hormonal imbalance symptoms

  • facilitate the detoxification process

  • understand my emotions and how they can fluctuate according to the different energies present

  • release energy blocks and suppressed emotions

  • know how my mental mood can alter depending on the cycles, from clarity and focus to a more intuitive nature

  • identify limiting thinking patterns that hold me back from doing the things I want to do

PRACTICES

Being aware of the moon phases (I use moon) and practicing rituals accordingly gives me a sense of working towards something, and so instead of being overwhelmed with how I feel or what is happening in my life, like I used to, now I feel much more prepared and equipped to deal with whatever might be present.

Sometimes the energy of the full moon can be totally paralysing, like how I experienced it last month. For the other more subtle times, having a regular practice of tuning in to the present energy and how it’s affecting me is a way to consciously ride this cosmic flow to advance my inner work process and recharge my sense of purpose for the upcoming cycle.

Here’s what I’m up to for tomorrow’s full moon:

Self-care ritual | all the body, hair, face care I keep postponing all month for when I have the time - now it’s really the time

Burn | I love burning some sensuous and mildly intoxicating natural resins like storax and labdanum resinoid over charcoal - I got mine from this super witchy shop in Glastonbury last year, and they do online delivery of course.

Sound | nothing beats the magic old Tibetan singing bowl to put me into a relaxed trance; if you don’t have one, you need to get one.

Go inward | I like to sit on my luscious sheepskin to meditate, I start with scanning my body, noticing my emotions, and thoughts, I then revisit the past few weeks, what I’ve wanted to have done, what happened or didn’t, and what I need to let go of or change direction so that I keep on track with my intentions.

Journal | I then free-flow write intuitively in my journal answers to all the above until I feel emptied out.

Workshop coming up:

In March, on pre full moon day Sunday the 8th in Amsterdam, I’m offering a 2h workshop on practicing utilising the cosmic energy flow and the power of therapeutic sound to refine your purpose and power up your vision for the upcoming cycle.
